What to Wear for Your Engagement Photos: Tips from a Wedding Planner

Northern VA Engagement Idea

There’s something so special about engagement photos. They’re a chance to slow down, soak in the moment, and celebrate this exciting chapter in your life—before all the wedding-day hustle begins. As a wedding planner, I always recommend that my couples book an engagement session. Not only do you get beautiful, relaxed photos together, but you also get comfortable in front of the camera before the big day.

But let’s be honest: figuring out what to wear can feel like its own mini-stressor. Even if you’re pulling outfits from your everyday closet, it’s important to make sure your clothes complement your location—and each other. Today, I’m sharing a few of my go-to tips for choosing the perfect engagement photo outfits!

Consider Your Location and Season

Your backdrop plays a big role in how your outfits will photograph. A light, linen dress may be perfect for a sunny beach shoot but might feel out of place in a cozy mountaintop session in the fall. Think about the time of year and the colors in your surroundings—whether it’s golden autumn trees, cherry blossoms in bloom, or a clean, modern cityscape.

Stick to a color palette that complements your environment instead of clashing with it. Neutrals, soft pastels, or rich earthy tones tend to work well in most settings. And don’t forget about texture—chunky knits, flowy fabrics, and subtle layers can add beautiful dimension to your photos.

Dress Like You, But Elevated

This is your moment to wear that outfit—the one you love but wouldn’t wear on the wedding day. Maybe it’s a sleek white jumpsuit, a long flowy dress, or even jeans and a chic blazer if that’s more your vibe. The key is to wear something that feels like you, only slightly elevated.

Confidence is everything in photos. If you’re constantly adjusting a too-tight dress or fussing with shoes that don’t quite fit, it’ll show. Wear something that makes you feel amazing, fits well, and moves comfortably—especially if your photographer wants you walking, twirling, or sitting for some of the shots.

A Few Pro-Tips from a Planner

If you’re already planning to do your hair and makeup trial on the day of your engagement shoot—great idea! Just remember to coordinate your outfit with your makeup look so everything feels cohesive. You don’t need a full glam look if you’re shooting barefoot at the beach.

Also: bring a backup outfit. Accidents happen, and having a second look gives you some variety in your gallery. Don’t forget to coordinate with your partner’s outfit too—you want to look like a couple, but avoid being too matchy-matchy. Think “cohesive,” not identical.

Final Thoughts (and How I Can Help)

At the end of the day, engagement sessions are such a fun way to connect with your photographer, get comfortable in front of the camera, and walk away with photos you’ll treasure forever. I always help my couples choose a photographer who matches their vibe and walk them through outfit choices if they need a second opinion.
